Shire of West Arthur Public Notice - Seeking Community Feedback

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) has recently received a report from an initial investigation of the Darkan Tannery site at 188 Shield Rd, Darkan, which ceased operations in 2004.

Since its closure, the site has been classified as Possibly Contaminated - requires further investigation, under the Contaminated Sites Act, 2003.

The Shire recently made enquiries into the status of the site with DWER which confirmed that this status remains in effect.

The Shire is interested in hearing from employees of the tannery or past/current residents who might be interested in the initial findings and next steps.

Any feedback or concerns will be collated by the Shire and, with permission from participants, forwarded to DWER to encourage the prioritisation of its investigation into this site.

The Shire encourages anyone with an interest to provide feedback. You can provide feedback verbally to the officer below or via written correspondence. Please indicate in your submission if you wish your feedback to remain anonymous.

Submissions will be accepted by the Shire up to the 31st August.

For further information, please contact the Shire of West Arthur’s Community Development Officer, Sharon Bell, at cdo@westarthur.wa.gov.au or on 9736 2400.
