Rubbish Collection And Recycling

Council rubbish collection services are contracted to Great Southern Waste. The rubbish is collected and taken to Darkan Rubbish Tip.

Kerbside Rubbish Collection

Darkan, Duranillin and Arthur River Townsites: every Wednesday morning.

Bulk rubbish can be collected from individual houses by arrangement with the Shire.

Recycling

Recycling is collected fortnightly on Wednesday Morning.

Kerb Side Collection Calendar 2024/2025

The recycling bins are for the following items only -

  • Plastic containers -rinsed and lids removed
  • Steel and aluminium cans - rinsed
  • Glass bottles and jars - rinsed and lids removed
  • Paper, newspaper and magazines - clean
  • Cardboard - Flattened and clean

All other waste should go in your usual bin with a green lid.

Your bins should be put out for collection at least one foot (30 cm) apart. Your recycling bin will be collected later on the same day as your rubbish collection, which will remain on the same day as usual.

E-Waste

As of 1 July 2024, the e-waste to landfill ban comes into effect.  This prohibits the disposal of regulated e-waste into landfill sites.

Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery (e-waste) Regulations 2024

Regulated e-wasted included in the ban include:

  • Screens, information technology, and telecommunications equipment
    • Televisions, computer monitors, desktop and laptop computers, tablets, servers, routers, cabling, keyboards, mice, mobile phones, cordless telephones
  • Lighting and lamps
    • Compact fluorescent lamps, straight tube fluorescent lamps, ceiling lights, electric table, desk and bedside lamps, household incandescent light globe, Christmas lights, bicycle lighting and signalling equipment
  • Large appliances used in the home, office or professional environment
    • Dishwashers, washing machines, ovens, rangehoods, dryers, coffee vending machines
  • Batteries
    • All batteries except embedded batteries
  • Temperature exchange equipment
    • Air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators, dehumidifiers, heating and ventilation equipment
  • Medical devices
    • Devices that would not fit into a container measuring 50 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm

The Shire of West Arthur has developed an e-waste collection site located next to the Shire Depot on Horwood Street. This site will accept screens, information technology, lighting, lamps, batteries, and medical devices. All white goods are to go Darkan landfill to the white goods area.
