The Shire of West Arthur is a friendly, rural community with agriculture and agriculture support services being the main industries in the region. Traditionally a wool producing region, primary producers have moved into grain and meat production in recent years, with most operating mixed farming enterprises. There is a wide range of opportunities for industry diversification in the Shire and value-adding for premium niche products.

The Shire has developed a ten year Economic Development Strategy which will be the roadmap to develop our economic vision.

Our strategy has been informed by extensive research and consultation and outlines the Shire’s existing position and strategic opportunities, whilst showcasing what matters to our community and the Council’s commitment to ensuring this strategy is delivered.

Close to transport routes and ports

Our location close to ports, on a main throughfare and close to other communities makes it an ideal place to do business. 

West Arthur is located 2.5 hours south of Perth, just over an hour from the port town of Bunbury and two hours from Albany.  The main administrative centre of Darkan is on Coalfields highway which links Albany Highway and Southwest highway.  Darkan is centrally located between Collie, Wagin, Williams, Boyup Brook, and Kojonup.
